Too much expectation and hype can pull a film down. And the delays suffered by actor-director Kamal Haasan with regard to Vishwaroopam added to the expectation and made his fans virtually long for the release.
Kamal Haasan is known for his meticulous ways and has put in a lot of hard work with regard to the film, which drew unwarranted flak and was in the eye of a storm for various issues. The legal tangles and the ruckus over the DTH issues which kept pulling the release date back, actually helped send the interest and curiosity quotient soaring.
Kamal Haasan's hard work comes to the fore in Vishwaroopam and he is the heart and soul of the movie while the rest of the cast and crew have contributed in their own way. It was trumpeted as a 'magnum opus' and turns out that way.
A spy thriller set in America, that now seems to be perennially at war with the terror groups across the globe, especially in
Afghanistan. There is no scene that is set in India.
The story begins in New York with Viswanath (Kamal Haasan), an epicene Kathak dancer who is married to nuclear oncologist Nirupama (Pooja Kumar). It is actually a marriage of convenience.Meanwhile, Nirupama has an affair with her boss who, as it happens, is a rather shady person with links to terrorists. The terror group is headed by one Omar (Rahul Bose), who has ties with terrorists in Afghanistan.Against run of play, Nirupama comes to know that her hubby Viswanath has another side to him, the darker one. In course of time, the duo is caught on the backfoot as Viswanath's past catches up. The rest of the film is about Kamal and his attempts to contain the terror groups. It is a high-quality spy thriller and it makes a lot of sense to catch it in theatres.
