After the well-made and well-received Yes Your Honour, director V.M. Vinu (of Balettan and Vesham fame) has come out with Sooryan.
Sooryan tells the story of Sooryanarayanan (Jayaram), the son of accomplished classical singer Harinarayanan (Saikumar). Sooryan too aspires to be a singer, but in the course of events that follow one after the other, he finds himself becoming a part of a world that was never even there in the remotest of his dreams. And what leads him into the mire that he finds himself in is his association with Cheriyan, who had been his classmate. In the meantime he finds love in his heart for a young girl named Maya, who is a radio jockey. But the love story too is destined to move on rather unexpected lines.
The problem with Sooryan is that by the time the film ends, you are left guessing as to what it was all about. Was it a musical or was it intended to be a family drama, laced with action; and action, which doesn’t seem to fit into the scheme of things. The storyline and the narration take you mostly by surprise and test your patience. The narrative leaves the average viewer totally exhausted.
There is nothing wrong with the performances of the main artists. Jayaram as Sooryan is good. Vimala as Maya too is OK. Saikumar as Harinarayanan is first rate. Suresh Krishna as Cheriyan is his very usual self. Others in the cast including Vijayaraghavan, Nandini, Vijayakumar, Sreehari etc fit into the bill perfectly. Harisri Ashokan’s Nandan doesn’t make much of an impression.
Songs are good, but not outstanding. The technical aspects are above average. So then, the fault lies with the storyline and the narration, which of course would never appeal to the viewers of today. Nor would the film work out with lovers of serious cinema.
Sooryan is a let down thanks to the writers and the director.
