Indrajith, Kalabhavan Mani’s latest release is just what a typical Kalabhavan Mani-starrer is, nothing new, nothing different. And it leaves you exhausted and even yawning at times. Director Haridas offers us nothing to excite our minds or to entertain us.
The film takes us to a village called Moolikkandam. ‘Chembarunthu’ Bhaskaran (Rajan.P.Dev), who is a goonda, brings his son up to be a goonda like him. And the son Bhasi (Kalabhavan Mani) lives life as a dreaded goonda, but one loved by people around him.
Anyhow the Panchayath President Madhavan Master (Nedumudi Venu) is determined to find a way to tame Bhasi, especially because he is irked by Bhasi’s successful attempts to prevent people from coming to run the stone quarry in the village. But Bhasi doesn’t do anything against Madhavan Master as he had been Bhasi’s teacher in school. Anyhow Madhavan Master brings in a guy named Zaheer Mustafa (Saiju Kurup), who gets set to run the quarry.
Bhasi comes to quash him like those who had come earlier. But something deters him from clashing with Zaheer Mustafa. But they finally clash and the story takes off from the point where Zaheer Mustafa is killed.
Kalabhavan Mani is his very usual self as Bhasi. Haven’t we been seeing him in roles like this in umpteen movies before? And none but Nedumudi Venu and Rajan.P.Dev are impressive. The female members in the cast are rather unimpressive too. Divya Viswanath as Madhavan Master’s daughter is a waste. Indraja too doesn’t have much to do as Shahina, Zaheer Mustafa’s sister, who props up only in the second half of the movie. Shalu Menon is just OK as Suma, Bhasi’s sister. Riyaz Khan is repeating himself as Rajendran, who is one of Bhasi’s friends and assistants. Saiju Kurup is of course tolerable compared to his first movie Mayookham, but he has yet to improve a lot. His character, that of Zaheer Mustafa could have been improved a lot. It’s high time our filmwallahs gave him roles with variety. None of the others in the cast have anything to do, performance wise.
Technical aspects are usually among the most neglected aspects in most Kalabhavan Mani-starrers of this genre. It is the same with Indrajith. Songs too just fizz off. The blame of course mainly goes to the credit of the scenarist Rajesh Jayaraman, who had done a better work in Time and also to the credit of the director Haridas. Producer Kalliyoor Sasi, whose last film was Sarkar Dada, delivers a totally unimpressive film in Indrajith, but there is no denying the point that Kalabahavan Mani starrers incur a very low budget and hence may not do much harm to the producer and may even revive him the cost in the long run. But for the viewer it is total paisa waste. And to sign off, any guesses as to why the film got the name Indrajith?
