After Kaazhcha, Thanmathra and Palunku, director Blessy now moves on to his next film, Calcutta News, which, as the title itself suggests, is set against the backdrop of Kolkata. The film takes us to the teeming and culturally versatile metropolis of Kolkata, where lives young Ajith Kumar, who is a programme producer in a television channel.
Ajith was born and brought up in Kolkata and it is here that he spends most part of his life. He had lost his father and now has his mother and sister to take care of. Ajith is the producer of a very popular show on television, named ‘Calcutta News’.
And in the course of the making of this television show, he moves on in life, meeting all sorts of people in all kinds of situations. It is in the course of this that he happens to meet a young girl named Krishnapriya, a victim of fate. Krishnapriya has her own story of all kinds of twists and turns, ups and downs and she is now in a rather queer situation.
Calcutta News covers the experiences of young Ajith Kumar in a span of one single year. It is Dileep who plays Ajith Kumar while Meera Jasmine does the role of Krishnapriya. The main thing about the film is that it has something of human interest to relate, something that touches you deep in the heart. And Blessy has commented that the film has got a narrative that is totally unlike that of any of his earlier films.
Debjyothi Misra, who is a Salil Chowdhary protégé, composes the music for Calcutta News, which is getting ready for release, probably by October.
